A graduate of the prestigious Royal Academy of Music (London, UK), Margaret Huggett has been instrumental in nurturing musical talent in generations of Canadians. Well known for her imaginative and memorable Orff classes, she has excelled in giving thousands of students a peerless musical headstart. These students include her own children, as well as the internationally-renowned pianist, Angela Hewitt and the celebrated operatic baritone, Gerald Finley. Mrs Huggett was also invited to conduct her Orff classes in New York, where she and her family were resident musicians in Westchester county.
Together with her husband, Leslie, she founded the Markham Music Academy (first known as The Huggett Family Teaching Studio and later The Flute Studio), where she has been a much-loved teacher, treasured for her warm and caring nature.
During The Huggett Family's concertising years, Mrs Huggett was an integral member of the ensemble, taking on the roles of chief librarian, script writer, costume designer and performer.
Well-read and cultured, Mrs Huggett has brought her artistic sensibilities to the academy in many different and indispensable capacities. Mrs Huggett is also a dedicated viola da gamba player and a much-valued member of her Toronto-based viol consort.
